YOGA CITTA VRITTA NIRODHAH
"Yoga Citta Vritta Nirodhah" Yoga is the understanding and complete mastery over the mind, the science of the mind. Ashtanga Vinayasa Yoga is a practice of connecting your breath with your movement (vinyasa), or pranayama (life-force/ breath) with your asana (posture).
The three places of attention or action (Tristhana). The attention is directed to posture (asana), breathing system (pranayama), and eye focus (Dristi). These are the three levels of purification: body, nervous system, and mind. Asanas are the movement of the body and posture that gives you flexibility and strength, pranayama engaging a deep inhale and exhale purifies the nervous systems, and dristi is where your eyes focus. If you steady your eyes gaze you can steady your mind in the asana. Therefore, dristhi purifies the functioning of the mind. In the yoga shastras it is said that god dwells in our heart in the form of light, but the light is covered by desire (kama), anger (krodha), delusion (moha), greed (lobha), envy (matsarya), and laziness (mada). If yoga is practiced with great diligence and mastery of your mind is processed over a long period of time the heat generated will burn away the 6 poisons, and the light of our inner nature will shine forth.
